Speaking to Angop on the occasion of the World Day of Biodiversity, 22 May, the national director of the sector, Joaquim Manuel, said Angola is a rich country in terms of fauna and flora.
Joaquim Manuel stressed the need for protection of spaces where the animals’ habitat has not been destroyed and needs the intervention of the communities.
According to him, no effort will be enough unless there is a change of attitude on the part of the population.
As he said, it is necessary that everyone understands the importance of each and every living being of the planet and that the destruction of any species directly affects human life.
Among the main causes of the loss of biodiversity, the official mentioned the destruction of habitats, introduction of exotic species and irrational use of natural resources.
On the other hand, the official spoke of the need for investments in technical and human means and creation of conservation areas.
This year, the theme chosen was "Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism ", as 2017 has been declared by the United Nations General Assembly as International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
