Desertification undermines agriculture

This opinion was expressed to ANGOP this Saturday by the environmental engineer, Edevaldo Alves Frederico de Almeida, regarding the June 17 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

Such a programme, he added, should strengthen the use of sustainable solutions in agriculture, community awareness, environmental education and the implementation of greenhouse gas reduction policies.

To him, desertification gradually reduces the productivity of soils, originating the deserts, in the most extreme cases, and reducing the number of cultivable areas.

"The impoverishment of the soil, characterized by the loss of nutrients, making its use unfeasible for agriculture, affects the local economy, since many families withdraw their livelihood through this practice.

As a result, all of the country's economy is influenced, which can lead to an increase in poverty in the communities due to a decrease in income, and actions to mitigate desertification turn out to be costly.
