The initiative follows the country’s ratification of the international convention that bans keeping wild animals in captivity.
Upgrading works have been underway since 2011,
Speaking at the press conference, the head of the Environment Department, Suzana Capitia, announced that the park will house different species of plants, mainly the ornamental ones, rather than animals.
Suzana Capitia explained that the botanical garden may become a favorable habitat for animals, especially birds, without necessarily being in captivity.
This includes leisure for the population.
Destroyed in 1990 by the armed conflict, the first rehabilitation and requalification phase took place between 2011 and 2012.
The following phase happened between 2014 and 2015.
