Benfica do Huambo celebrates 79th anniversary looking ahead

Luanda – The central Huambo-based club “Sport Huambo e Benfica, formerly Mambroa, is celebrating on Wednesday 79 years of its existence recalling its past and thinking of its future as the greatest and most popular of the region.
The director-general of the club, César Augusto Mateus, said that in celebration of the 79th anniversary, a meeting will take place to reflect on the current moment and outline strategies for its revival, both at short and middle term.
He said that one of the goals of the club is to gain a more active participation of supporters in actions that aim at the financial sustainability of Benfica do Huambo and project to relaunch other sports, including basketball, athletics and handball.
César Augusto Mateus considered that Benfica do Huambo is facing a difficult moment, due to the lack of a sponsor that can help to attain goals set by the managing board.
He called on the club’s supporters and members, as well as other people to join the effort being made.
Benfica do Huambo was set up on September 29, 1931, by a group of Portuguese citizens, supporters of the Portugal's Sport Lisboa Benfica.
Benfica do Huambo participates in the main national championship of football (Girabola) since its first edition in 1979, before dropping from the first division in 1997.
