According to the official responsible for the communication area, Sanção Salomão, the decision resulted from meetings of the club’s managing board, held last week and it was already informed to the Angolan Football Federation (FAF) and the Luanda Provincial Football Association (APFL), waiting for answer.

"Benfica de Luanda, through the club’s board meeting, decided to temporarily suspend their participation in Grabola, as from this year, as a strategy of the club’s managing board", he said.

He said that, after careful consideration, the club considered it preferable to dedicate all financial, human and logistical resources to the youth category, believing that there should be an urgent change in the current panorama of the national football.

According to him, the decision is correct, as it will allow avoiding unnecessary expenses related to the hiring of players and start a season and then in the middle of the championship the club runs the risk of having to give up, which is not right. However, he added that it was not a withdrawal because he had not started the season yet.

Benfica de Luanda debuted in Girabola in 1998, when they finished fourth position, but their best standing in the championship was in 2009 when the club occupied the third place.

In Girabola2016, the team came sixth with 44 points.
