Football: FIFA invests USD six million in Angolan sport

Luanda - Angola will benefit from USD 6 million for development projects over the next four years, announced the president of the International Association Football Federation (FIFA).

Gianni Infantino, who is in Angola since Thursday afternoon, announced this in a statement to the press, after an audience granted by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

The official stated that the said investment will mainly be channelled to infrastructures development programmes for youth and women's football following the analysis of specific projects.

He praised the players of the Angola Under-17 National Team, who recently participated in the World Cup of the category, held in Brazil.

“The Angolan athletes played very well. We have a basis and we will work for the growth of the sport,” he said.

Regarding FIFA's audit on the Angolan Football Federation (FAF) accounts, Infantino expressed satisfaction with the results of the work.

In the FIFA delegation, among others, are included the General-Secretary, Fatma Samoura (Senegal), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) chairman Ahmed Ahmed (Madagascar), as well as the former Cameroonian international soccer player Samuel Eto'o. 

Born in Brig, Switzerland, on 23 March 1970, Gianni Vinceno Infantino is at the helm of FIFA since 26 February 2016 and was the General Secretary of the European Football Union (UEFA) from 2009 to 2016.

Infantino, a lawyer, becomes the second FIFA president to visit Angola, after Joseph Blater in January 2010, on the occasion of the African Cup of Nations (CAN).

Prior to coming to Angola, Infantino made working visits to The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea Conakry, DR Congo and Mozambique.
