Basketball: Petro gear up to pursue African League trophy
Luanda - The vice president for basketball of Petro de Luanda, Artur Barros, affirmed last Wednesday that the club is ready to conquer the first edition of Basketball African League (BAL) whose first phase shall be held from 13 to 15 March in Senegal.

In a statement to ANGOP, the official stressed the intention to reinforce the squad with a foreign athlete, despite having already the American Antwan Scott and the Angolan Abubacar Gakou, taking into account that the competition allows four expatriates.
Without advancing names, origin or positions, Artur Barros pointed out the financial situation (difficulties in acquiring foreign exchanges) faced by the club, as the main reason behind such pending situation, so the board are trying to find an athlete who accepts to be paid in kwanza (Angolan currency).
“The national championship is to increase the competitive form of the group and maintain the players sporting form”, he stressed, ruling out the possibility of the team carrying out a training programme abroad for the African league.
Petro will play the group phases facing GS Petroliers da Argélia, AS Police (Mali), GMN Basket (Madagascar), AS Douanes (Senegal) and AS Salé (Morocco).
In another group plays River Hoopers (Nigeria), Ferroviário de Maputo (Mozambique), US Monastir (Tunisia), Zamalek (Egypt), FAP (Cameroon) and Patriots (Rwanda).
Petro de Luanda conquered the African Clubs League in 2006 and 2015, The trophy holders, 1º de Agosto, won for the ninth time in 2019.
However, the competition which is now called Basketball African League (BAL) will be held in various ways and in various countries, being the first phase from 13 to 15 March in Senegal, the second in Luanda (10 to 12 April), the third and last regular phase in Morocco from 8 to 10 May.
The quarter-finals will take place on 26 and 27 May in Rwanda and afterwards the four finalist clubs will play in final-four system from 29 to 31 May, as well in Rwanda, the champion shall be the one with the highest number of victories.
The BAL winner will receive USD 150,000 prize, the second placed USD 75,000 and the third one USD 55 and the fourth USD 25,000.
