Zaire: Peasants urged to be organized in associations

Mbanza Congo - The governor of the northern Zaire province, José Joanes André, urged on Wednesday in Mbanza Congo city the local farmers to organize themselves into associations and cooperatives in order to facilitate the authorities to direct the support they need to exercise their activity.

Joanes André was speaking at the provincial act allusive to the 26th anniversary of the Association of Peasants and Agro-livestock Cooperatives of Angola (UNACA).

He said the local government has available means of transport to support the peasants organized in associations, for the transportation of their agricultural products from the production to the consumption areas.

The governor acknowledged that the main basis of livelihood of the population of the region is agriculture, hence the importance of investing in this sector, at a time when the watchword is the diversification of the national economy.

The official also assured support in mechanized means to the associated farmers, in order to increase production.

The act counted on the participation of peasants, members of the local government, and business people of the agricultural sector, among others.
