Huila: Dutch company supports farmers in Matala irrigated perimeter

Matala - A Dutch agricultural company will support farmers of the irrigated perimeter of Matala, southern Huila province, for the large-scale production of potato, said on Monday the chairman of 1º de Maio cooperative, Victor Fernandes.

Speaking to Angop, the official said that the project is of a private initiative, which is part of the Angolan government's programme of diversification of the economy, and in the first phase will prepare over a hundred hectares of land for potato cultivation.

He stressed that in addition to the potato seed the company may also provide farmers with fertilizers and trade the production in the domestic market.

1º de Maio cooperative explores more than seven thousand hectares of the irrigated area of Matala which produces more than 150.000 tons of food a year, including vegetables, tubercles and cereals.
