Drought fight actions stepped up in Cunene

Luanda - The Ministry of Energy and Water is to make on Friday (15), in Cufo locality, southern Cunene Province, the launching of the first stone and the allocation of the works to the contractor for the start of structural projects turned to the fight against the drought hitting the southern region of the country.

The act prompts the start of the construction of the water catchment plant on the Cunene River, pumping system, pressurized fluid conduit, from the open channel from Cafu to Cuamato.

The structural projects turned  to the fight against the drought was approved by the presidential dispatch 167/19 of 04 October, and they will allow the opening of 10 water storage tanks, destined for cattle consumption.

The project will allow water transfer from the Cunene river, Cafu location to the south zone of Shana, between the Cuamato and Namacunde location, which is integrated into drought mitigation actions.

With the execution of this structuring works, the Executive will start a long process aiming to reestablish the normal drinking water access to the population, as well as for the subsistence agriculture practice and livestock food security, caused by the scarcity of rain and the consequent reduction of the Cunene and Cuvelai watersheds, which in some way are the support of human and animal life in the province.

The drought hitting the provinces of Cunene, Namibe, Huila and Cuando Cubango has affected 280.867 families, corresponding to 1,340,781 citizens, in a situation that caused also the death of 10,982 heads of cattle and the destruction of 52,119 agricultural fields.
