The project, presented last Thursday to members of the local government, traditional authorities and students, is part of the program of the Ministry of Energy and Water, which aims to build seven photovoltaic plants in the same number of provinces in the country, valued at 539 million euros.
The works of the plant will last 17 months.
At the ceremony, the acting administrator of Saurimo, Francisco Guerra, said that the construction of the photovoltaic plant will increase the energy supply, as only 16 MW are available.
Interconnection project with the north of the country
The secretary of State for Energy, António Belsa da Costa, clarified that the project to interconnect the northern system, from Malanje, with the east of the country (Lunda Norte, Moxico and Lunda Sul) is awaiting financial resources.
The project, which is part of the Ministry's priorities, will have a 400 and 220MW transmission line and a substation.
The director of the provincial office for infrastructure and technical services in Lunda Sul, Cláudio Pemessa, recalled that the municipality of Saurimo needs 70 megawatts of power to improve the supply of electricity to consumers and to cope with growth economic activity.
The province has 16 megawatts that are produced by the Chicapa Hydroelectric Dam, but it does not meet the demand, for an estimated population of more than 534,231 inhabitants.
The energy consumed in Saurimo comes from the thermal plants of Txicumina (5 megawatts) and Greco (11 megawatts), and the Chicapa 1 hydroelectric dam, with a capacity of 16 megawatts, provides only four MW for the city.
In the province, the National Firm of Electricity Distribution (ENDE) has 15,000 customers, 700 are in the municipality of Dala, which benefit from energy from two thermal power plants, Chicapa and Tchihumbwe hydroelectric dam.
