This was said on Sunday by the Minister of State for Economic and Social Development, Manuel Nunes Júnior, when presiding over the opening ceremony of the National Meeting of Education/2018, running until Thursday under the motto “ Build Capacity of Teachers is to Assure Education of Quality for All”.

According to him, despite the remarkable results achieved in the field of education, particularly since 2002 with the conquest of peace, there are still many children outside the educational system, which must be solved with great efficiency and determination.

“ Essa questão deve ser encarada como um desafio a enfrentar e ultrapassar com sucesso”, enfatizou.

"This issue must be seen as a challenge to successfully address and overcome it," he emphasized.

He recalled that in 15 years, Angola multiplied by four the number of the national pre-university education system, from 2.5 million students in 2002 to almost 10 million in the current school year.

In 2000, he said, the illiteracy rate in Angola was over 50 percent. By 2014, according to data from the Population Census, the overall illiteracy rate dropped significantly to 34 percent.

In the youngest adult population, that is, between 15 and 25 years of age, the illiteracy rate is even lower, standing at 23 percent, he concluded.

The National Meeting on Education / 2018 aims at analyzing with civil society the current state of basic and secondary education in Angola, to take suitable decisions to ensure an inclusive and education of quality.

The meeting is also assessing the performance of the education system in face of educational policy proposals and the quality on the full preparation of the teachers for the challenges of the sustainable development of the country.
