According to the jury of the competition, promoted annually by the Ministry of Culture, the songs and lyrics of Carlos Lamartine are rooted in the urban and popular music of Angola, as well as stand out for their socio-political content and folkloric elements, which represent great contributions to Angolan music and culture.

He was born José Carlos Lamartine Salvador dos Santos Costa in the centre-west Benguela Province, on 29 March 1943.

Carlos Lamartine was the founder of the music groups “Os Kissuekeia” and “Macacos do Ritmo”, then eventually he joined another band, Águias Reais, as the lead vocalist.

His first single came out in 1970, while the album was released in 1974, entitled “Angola no I”, a valuable work marked by its socio-political content, based on protest songs against the status quo imposed by the colonial system.

His latest album, entitled “Caminhos Longos”, was released in the year 2007.
