In a congratulatory message addressed to the Angolan Government through the Ministry of Culture, the Portuguese official emphasizes that, being the first Angolan candidature validated by that United Nations agency, it is an important step in the valorization of the rich and considerable material and immaterial cultural heritage available.

The Historic Center of Mbanza Kong city, the ancient capital of Kingdom of Kongo, which comprised the DRC, Congo Brazzaville and Gabon, was included in the World Heritage list during the 41st session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Krakow, Poland.

Mbanza Kongo was, in the seventeenth century, the largest village on the West Coast of Central Africa, with a population of 40,000 (native) inhabitants and 4,000 Europeans.

With its decline, the city that was at the center of the kingdom in the middle of the golden age became a mystical and spiritual village of the kikongo ethnolinguistic group and housed the Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville and Gabon.

Mbanza Kongo is bordered to the north by Kuimba and DRC, to the south and east by the province of Uíge, and to the west by the municipalities of Tomboco and Nóqui.
