The homage served to celebrate the 82nd anniversary of Angolan nationalistMendes de Carvalho, born on 29 August.

Among those attending the homage, held at Journalists Training Centre in Luanda were renowned writers, politicians, journalists and students.

Accompanied by his wife, Mendes de Carvalho received gifts from the governing MPLA first secretary in Luanda, Bento Bento, deputy minister of Mass Media, Manuel Miguel de Carvalho "Wadijimbi" and members of the speciality committees of the ruling party.

Born in Calomboloca, Catete, Bengo province, Mendes de Carvalho embraced, while young, the liberating cause of the country, against the brutality of former fascist regime of Portugal.

He was jailed by PID-DGS (former Portuguese police) in the beginning of 1960.

He is the oldest Member of Parliament for the ruling MPLA party since 1992.
