Speaking at a meeting with the Angolan community in Harare, on the fringes of his participation in the 40th Plenary Assembly Session of the Southern Africa Development Community Parliamentary Forum (SADC-PF), Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos said Angola cannot continue to depend exclusively on crude-oil.
He reminded that crude-oil is a non-renewable source of wealth, therefore, Angolans must prepare their future.
“We have been taking important steps towards the diversification of the economy with results already visible. We’ll be happy if the price of oil goes up, but we are definitely sure that our future does not depend solely on crude-oil”, he explained.
He went on to say that the country has water, arable land and many other riches in its soil, so its citizens have real reasons to be confident about the future.
Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos also explained the reason why he is in Harare, the topics and results of the forum he attended, which culminated with the election of Angola to the post of chair of the SADC Parliamentary Forum for the next two years.
He said the meeting discussed pertinent issues like the situation of stateless persons, the SADC Model Law on Premature Marriage, and the election of the SADC-PF chair.
“Our delegation did a great work of promotion and defence of our leadership proposal and, fortunately, we managed to get Angola elected by unanimity”, he revealed.
He then stressed that “now we need to work”, adding that Angolans are used to facing and overcoming challenges.
“We’ll do all we can to honour the country and dignify our traditions”, he assured.
