Angola seeks involvement of international community in assisting DRC refugees

Luanda - The Angolan government today reaffirmed the need for greater involvement of the international community in providing assistance to the approximately 30,000 refugees fleeing the conflict in the Cassai region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The standing was expressed by Foreign Minister Georges Rebelo Chikoti at the end of a meeting granted by Vice-President Manuel Vicente to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC,  Okitundu Leonard.

According to Minister Georges Chikoti, there is a need for greater monitoring of the international community and strong engagement of local authorities to restore peace and stability in that Democratic Congolese Cassai region.

To the Angolan and DRC press, the minister stated that the Angolan state has already provided about three million dollars in tents, food and other goods to ensure better assistance to refugees.

He informed that Angola mobilized means of transportation, food, tents, medicines and other goods.

He said that efforts were being made to provide the best conditions for food and medical assistance to refugees, and that international partner, especially agencies of the United Nations system, also needed to be involved.

He pointed out that this week the transfer of refugees to the interior of Angolan territory was started up to 50 kilometers, as international standards recommend, since they should not remain in the border area.

The deputy prime minister and Foreign minister of the DRC is currently visiting the Angolan province of Lunda Norte, which is home to the largest number of refugees from  DRC to find out about the impact of the humanitarian catastrophe.
