US highlights Angolan president's engagement in signing of Memorandum of Understanding

Washington - The engagement of president José Eduardo dos Santos in the process that led to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Angola and the United States of America in the Defence field was highlighted.

This is at a time diplomatic relations between Angola and the USA are turning 24 years.

The information was released Wednesday in Washington DC, by the Angolan Defence minister, João Lourenço, at the end of a visit to the Pentagon Memorial marked by the signing of the Memorandum of understanding with the local State secretary of Defence, James Mattis.

According to João Lourenço, this kind of agreements always require the parties to be in authoritative position to sign, hence the US official stressing the fact that president Eduardo dos Santos gave green light to the Defence minister for the purpose.

The Angolan Defence minister stressed that with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, all possibilities for further deals in various relevant domains between the two countries are in place.

According to the minister who laid a wreath by the tomb of the unknown soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, said Angola will as from now take steps to implement what has been agreed upon.

João Lourenço stated as well that the US authorities will appoint and send a technical team to Luanda for further agreements.

Angola and USA enjoy a cooperation in the Defence field covering staff training, teaching of English language, health assistance and fight against Hiv/Aids.

The Angolan official stated as well that the US authorities have expressed interest to have cooperation strengthened in the technical and military spheres, chiefly concerning joint exercises.

The Republic of Angola has been playing a crucial role in southern and central Africa regions, particularly concerning resolution of conflicts in the Great Lakes region.

In December 2016 Angola ended its UN Security Council non-permanent member term and extended it for another year.
