Diplomats praise achievements of Cuito Cuanavale battle

Cuito Cuanavale - The Cuban and Namibian ambassadors, Gisela Rivera and Cláudia Uushona, respectively, Tuesday highlighted the overthrow of the apartheid regime in South Africa as a consequence of the collapse of South African troops in Cuito Cuanavale battle in the south-eastern Cuando Cubango province.

According to the diplomats, who spoke to Angop, at the end of the inauguration of the Memorial to the Victory of Cuito Cuanavale Battle, which was the favorable outcome for Angola to trace the paths to Namibia's independence.

To the Cuban ambassador, the battle changed the course of Southern Africa's history, a fact that today is pride of the Cuban people, for the contribution made to the Angolan brothers.

On her turn, the Namibian ambassador considered crucial the battle for Namibia's independence and for securing the acceptance of United Nations Council resolution 435 for the independence of Namibia.

The memorial to the victory of the Cuito Cuanavale battle was inaugurated on Tuesday by the President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, built in the honour of the fighters who defended this locality against the occupation of the former South African apartheid regime.
