According to a press release from the President's Office which reached Angop on Monday, it will be the first time that an Angolan Head of State will speak in the mentioned Chamber.

President João Lourenço will take the floor before MPs at the end of Wednesday morning, and will return to the country on the same day.

European Parliament

The European Parliament is a forum for policy debate and decision-making at European Union (EU) level.

Its members are directly elected by universal suffrage in all member states to represent, for five years, the interests of citizens in drafting laws and to ensure that other community institutions work in a democratic manner.

Parliament acts as a co-legislator, sharing with the Council the power to adopt and amend legislative proposals and to decide on the budget of the European Union.

It also monitors the work of the committee and other bodies of the Union, and cooperates with the national parliaments of the member countries in obtaining their views.

The legislative body believes that its role is not only to promote democratic decision-making in Europe, but also to support the fight for democracy, freedom of expression and fair elections around the world.

António Tajani, an Italian national, has been chairing the European Parliament since 17 January 2017, a legislative body composed of 751 Members.
