The message was delivered to Ghanaian president by the Angola's Vice President, Bornito de Sousa, on the sidelines of the Kofi Annan funeral ceremonies, held at the International Conference Center in Accra.

The former UN Secretary-General was buried on Thursday at the Military Cemetery of Accra.

Speaking to the press on behalf of the president João Lourenço, Bornito de Sousa said that the tribute to Annan fits his dimension.

He compared the ceremony to the one that marked the departure of the former South African leader, Nelson Mandela.

He noted that Kofi Annan was loved by his people and marked Africa, as being the second African to reach the top UN position.

Annan’s role became relevant in the process of liberation of the East Timor and peace process in Angola, he said.

The Vice President said he felt the unity and unanimity about the role and relevance of the figure of Kofi Annan, who died on August 18 in Switzerland at the age of 80.

The ceremony was attended, among the other figures, by the host president Nana Akuffo Addo, UN Secretary general  António Guterres, as well as the Presidents of  Liberia, Zimbabwe, Cote D'Ivoire, Namíbia, Níger, amongst the African and Europeans statesmen who paid the tribute to Annan

Kofi Annan was the 7th UN Secretary-General and remained in post from 1 January 1997 to 1 January 2007.

Bornito de Sousa remained between Wednesday and Thursday in Accra, in representation of the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço.
