Luanda – The World Suicide Prevention Day is being celebrating this Thursday, September 10.
This is an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation.
The date aims at calling the attention of the society on the problem that is the main cause of avoidable premature death and urges governments to develop national prevention strategies.
According to data from the WHO, almost one million people commit suicide per year in the world, or one in each 40 seconds, a reality that could partially be avoided in case preconception is curbed.
Because of this day, the World Health Organization (WHO), which is working together with governments and other partners such as the International Association for Suicide Prevention, called for joining of efforts to promote knowledge about the real meaning of suicide and enable its prevention.
Most suicides are committed in Asia, with 60 percent of the aforementioned total figure.
