The local health official disclosed such information to the press with the intention to deny allegations made by the opposition PRS party secretary, António Selende, according to whom Huambo Province is being hit by a cholera outbreak that has already caused dozens of deaths.
She went on to say that the situation in the province improved substantially due to the reinforcement of preventive measures by the population, chiefly in regard to the consumption of treated water and rigorous implementation of sanitation measures.
Jovita André reminded that the last cholera case recorded in Huambo took place in the year 2014.
Meanwhile, the official also informed that malaria continues to have a strong and worrying incidence in the province, whose consequences are made worse by the fact that many patients reach the health units showing an advanced state of the disease.
She guaranteed, however, that the authorities have been taking the necessary measures to counteract the manifestation of the disease, such as by making medicines sufficiently available, distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets and the holding of fumigation activities.
Huambo Province’s population is estimated at 2.7 million people.
