Over 1,000 detained over alleged involvement in crimes

Luanda - National Police detained 1,197 citizens - nationals and foreigners - during an operation carried out from 21 to 24 dubbed "Relampago", on suspicion of involvement in various crimes and illegal migration situation.

The data were released by head of Information and Statistics Office of General Command of National Police, José da Piedade.

José da Piedade, who was taking stock of the operation, told the journalists that among the  detainees include 722 nationals and 475 foreigners from various nationalities with illegal immigration status.

Seventy percent of the people were caught in the act and 30 % of arrest warrants for alleged involvement in various crimes.

The suspects, include cases of voluntary homicide, armed robbery and rape.

The officer also said 153 members who were detained belonged to 39 criminal organisations.

The police also seized 114 firearms of various sizes, 488 vehicles, 617 motorcycles, 827,733 kilograms of cannabis, and 387 meters of electric cables and 193 vehicle engines.

The operation covered the provinces of Luanda, Huíla, Uíge, Cuanza Sul, Cuanza Norte, Huambo, Benguela, Bengo, Bié,  Zaire and Cabinda.
