The minister said so at the opening ceremony of the 2nd Course on Public Security and Media for Journalists, running from 18 - 20 this month, under the motto "a minute to inform, safe society."

According to João Melo, the Media also have a role to play in fighting against crime and restoring the state authority.

He spoke of the Media's role in contributing to the education of society to encourage people to denounce the criminal acts.

The move is meant to combat the crime rate in the country, he said.

The minister defended the promotion, along with society, of civic, moral and ethical values, and combat negative principles.

The world is experiencing hard times, said João Melo, adding that there is a tendency for the search for success and pursuit of wealth, with some getting involved in wrongdoing to achieve their success.

In this case, he noted, the Media need to enhance the good practices.

On the other hand, the minister cautioned that while doing the best to enhance the rules, the Media should avoid the risk of falling victim of sensationalism.

The event, which gathers journalists and police officers, is  discussing, among other topics, the general framework of public safety.
