Luanda holds 3rd meeting on traditional authority

Luanda - Luanda province is holding this Wednesday the 3rd provincial meeting on traditional authority to discuss the draft law and the succession of traditional authorities.

The meeting is taking place in Catete commune, municipality of Icolo and Bengo, Luanda province.

The participants are also addressing the possible means to ensure the participation in Government programme of more than 40,000 traditional authorities across the country.

They are seeking consensus on the official costumes, allowances, criteria of succession and legitimacy of the traditional authorities, as well as the territory in which they should carry out their activities.

Addressing an opening ceremony, the deputy governor for the social sector, Dionísio da Fonseca, said that traditional authorities have an important role in mediating relations between the state and the communities.

He stressed the importance of traditional authorities in territorial planning and land management, preservation of historical and cultural values, as well as in the defence of the legitimate interests of their communities.

Dionísio da Fonseca recalled that the country will start a process of institutionalization of local authorities, calling for urgent reflection on the role of traditional authorities.

Luanda has 303 traditional authorities, including 10 women.
