Artisanal fishing falls in Malanje province
Malanje - The artisanal fishing has dropped in the northern Malanje province due to the scarcity of fishing means, such as boats, hooks and nets, which enabled only 17 tons of fish to be caught by the local artisanal cooperatives during the first quarter of this year, representing 26 tons less than of those recorded in the same period in 2019.

The information was disclosed to ANGOP on Saturday by the head of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Provincial Office of Agriculture and Forestry, Domingos Americano, adding that most of the boats, with which the cooperatives work, lack maintenance.
He also spoke of the lack of resources to acquire other means of fishing, besides the consequences of the Covid-19, which has compromised the increase of the fishing.
As a result, Domingos Americano said, there has been a rise in the prices of the fish and reduction in demand for fish on local market.
Malanje Provincial Government, through the Office of Economic and Integrated Development, is studying a plan to facilitate the granting of credits to artisanal fishers' cooperatives at regional level.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Provincial Office of Agriculture and Forestry controls 1,300 artisanal fishers, distributed in 31 cooperatives.
