Before the Berlin Conference which cut Africa "ruler and Squadron" the area which today makes up the province of Uíje was part of the Kingdom of Congo (which apart from northern Angola comprised also the two current Congos).

The province borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zaire province in the North, with the province of Malanje, Kuanza Norte province to the Southeast, and the province of Bengo. Its capital is the city of Uíje (former Carmona).

The province has a population of peasant and basically bakongo ethnic group and some kimbundo and the main spoken language is kikongo.

Uige area is of 58,698 km2.

Uige has a humid tropical climate and the annual average temperature is around 24ºc.
 

Ethnic Groups

The province’s main ethnic group is the Bakongo and the most commonly spoken language Kikongo.

Uíje has a population density of around 1,894,867 inhabitants.

The province of Uíje has a rich potential in natural resources with regard to copper, diamond, granite, Limestone, clay, Marble, Laterite, gravel, Pyrite, Zinc, Lead, talcum, Semi-precious Mineral, Kaolin and Bauxite.
