Afrobasket2017: Angola's failure blamed on poor preparation

This was said to Angop by the coach of eastern Moxico province basketball team, Zeferino Menezes, while commenting on Angola’s participation in the  Afrobasket2017, in which the team finished in the sixth position.

The coach said the secret to achieve success in high competition has to do with good preparation, cohesion and patriotic spirit.

He criticised the technical team for taking unseasoned young players and for practicing an old-fashioned basketball, facing difficulties mainly during the match against Mozambique that ousted Angola from the title fight.

The former basketball player underlined that should there be  no improvement and attention to the young players categories, Angola would be doomed to failures.

Zeferino Menezes also criticised the recently adopted policy of granting Angolan nationality to foreign players, stating that the country has already given evidences of having a potential that should be worked on to compete not only for success but for patriotism and the national flag.

With regard to the resignation of the former head coach, he stated that that was a good decision, since the problem does not rest with the coaches but with the athletes themselves.

Angola started the Afrobasket2017 with wins over Cameroon (66-54), Mali (68-59), Tunisia (62-55), Cote d’Ivoire, (70-62) and DRC (96-58), before losing to Mozambique by 47-61 in the quarter finals and to Cote d’Ivoire (56-61), thus finishing sixth in the competition won by Nigeria.

Angola that won the competition in 2012 and 2013 sought to reach its third African title.
