Angolan President declares one-day national mourning in Fidel Castro's memory

Luanda - The Angolan president, José Eduardo dos Santos, declared on Friday a one-day national mourning on December 4 following the death of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander Fidel Castro Ruz.

According to a note from the President’s Civil Office that reached Angop, during the period of the national mourning, national flag must fly at half mast.

The former Cuban President died on Friday November 25, age 90 in Havana city.

Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926 in Birán, Cuba, and was the chief leader of the Cuban Revolution (1953-1959) prime minister of Cuba (1959-1976) and first head of the State Council of Republic of Cuba (1976-2008).

The President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, manifested on 26 November, 2016, his profound consternation at the physical disappearance of the Cuban Revolution leader and former President of the Cuban Republic, Commander Fidel Castro Ruz.

President José Eduardo dos Santos considers Fidel Castro a singular figure with a transcending historical importance who placed a mark on his epoch with the role he played in his country and in the great transformations of humanity, in favour of liberty, social justice and development of the peoples.

The Angolan Head of State recalls, in this moment, the solidarity given by Cuba to colonized peoples, especially the Angolan people, having underlined the unforgettable contribution of that country, under his leadership, to the defence and maintenance of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Angola, in resisting the aggression of the then racist South African regime.

President José Eduardo dos Santos also conveyed his deep condolences to President Raul Castro Ruz, His government, the Cuban people and the family in mourning, thus paying homage to this illustrious figure that is Commander Fidel Castro.
