Govt wants to expand integrated services to health facilities

Luanda - At least 30 percent of Municipal health facilities will benefit from the integrated mental health services by 2022, with a view to promoting and encouraging research into the motivations and impact on suicide.

Data show 2 500 people, amongst young and old people, as having died from suicide in the last five years.

The data also indicate that in the 2016/2019 some 85,000 747 patients with disorders such as depression (leading the mental disorders), stress, anxiety and schizophrenia, were treated at health facilities.

Suicide is mentioned as the second leading cause of death among young people aged 15-55 in Angola and 15-29 worldwide.

Still, the data released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that 800,000 people commit suicide on yearly basis globally.


The acting National Director of Public Health, Eusébio Manuel spoke of the Angolan Executive concerned about the need to reducing mental disorders with integrated service in health care and humanisation of services.
 

Speaking at the opening of the 7th Mental Health Conference, Eusébio Manuel said the government is planning to launch this year fire-fighting and criminal investigation service, a compulsory notification template of all suicide attempts in all public and private health units.

The National Health Development Plan 2012-2025, the Health Ministry's main strategic instrument on fight against major endemics, aims to increase the availability of mental health services at the primary level.
 

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is supporting the Government in the creation of a national mental health response.

To this purpose, it has been drafted and approved a National Mental Health Strategy, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, a guideline for joint action and intervention.

This year, the celebration of World Mental Health Day is focused on suicide prevention
