On a note signed by the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, coordinator of the Southern Judiciary Region, Armando Beira Grande, to which ANGOP had access, indicated that magistrates should re-examine the coercion measures applied to defendants under preventive detention.

"These should be placed on provisional release and that public prosecutors and judges are committed to implementing measures aimed at releasing defendants in this condition and defendants convicted with sentences of up to two years", reads the note.

Speaking on the subject, the jurist Gualberto Longuenda said that it is a measure under the Law of Precautionary Judicial Measures that establishes other actions of personal coercion, other than pre-trial detention (…)”.

To him, there is a clear demonstration of concern for the criminal population here, at a time when health authorities are raising awareness about preventive measures against the covid-19 pandemic.

In Huíla, the penal population is estimated at 1600 prisoners, among detainees and convicts, distributed by prison establishments in the municipalities of Lubango, Caconda and Matala.
