The United Nations “strongly condemns” last week’s jihadist assault on the northern Mozambique town of Palma, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Monday.
“We are deeply concerned by the still evolving situation in Palma where armed attacks began on March 24, reportedly killing dozens of people, including some trying to flee a hotel where they had taken shelter,” Dujarric said.
Militants raided Palma, a town of around 75,000 in the province of Cabo Delgado, on Wednesday in a major escalation of an Islamist insurgency that has steadily spread across northern Mozambique since 2017.
The Islamic State group said Monday it had seized the coastal town.”We continue to coordinate closely with the authorities on the ground to provide assistance to those affected by the violence,” Dujarric said.
“The United Nations reaffirms its solidarity and continued support to the government of Mozambique in its efforts to protect civilians, restore stability and bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice,” he added.
