Ondjiva – Almost one hundred thousand peasant families, enlisted in 150 cooperatives in the southern province of Cunene, are benefiting from seeds from the Agrarian Development Institute (IDA), aiming at boosting production during the 2020/2021 campaign.
The IDA has 620,000 tonnes of seeds of various cereals, vegetables and tubers.
Farmers are also receiving 340,000 tonnes of fertilizers, 15.000 of ammonium sulfate, 15,000 of urea and 10 litres of pesticides.
Among the means available to producers are also 300 ploughs, 80 back sprayers, eight cultivating motorcycles, 14 drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.
Speaking to ANGOP last Monday, the head of IDA in Cunene, Anita Esperança, said that this year 310 thousand hectares are prepared for farming, of which 186 thousand with animal traction, 93 thousand by hand and 31 thousand mechanized.
The official informed that the distribution takes place in the six municipalities of the province, allowing peasants to have seeds to throw to the land, at a time when Cunene registers regular rains.
Anita Esperança explained that the province also has 20 tractors distributed in four brigades, which are helping families.
In the 2019/2020 agricultural campaign, the province of Cunene prepared 250,000 hectares of land, distributed among 120,000 peasant families, where 85,000 tonnes of corn and pasta were harvested.
