Ondjiva - The Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, António Francisco de Assis, said today in Ondjiva that the conclusion of the Cafu Water Transfer System project will boost productive activity in the region, given the extension of arable land along the stretch.
According to the government official, the operation of the canal will make it possible to irrigate thousands of hectares of land, allowing the population living along the stretch to stop depending exclusively on rainfall for agriculture.
"In Cunene, we have subsistence agriculture, where families cultivate the sorghum and some vegetables in the rainy season, but, with the canal, there is the possibility of introducing other varieties, such as vegetables, fruit trees and tubers.
He said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is working on the installation of an irrigation system, such as drip and micro-sprinklers, small cannons that will work through solar systems, so that farmers have access to water.
He noted that maize, sorghum, pumpkins, watermelon, sweet potato, fruit trees and other varieties of produce were being introduced.
Francisco de Assis referred that in the livestock domain, pig and poultry farming is being implemented with the creation of pigs, chickens and ducks.
