Ecunha – About 20,000 tons of reindeer potatoes are produced annually by peasants and agricultural cooperatives in the municipality of Ecunha, Huambo province, ANGOP learned today.
The information was provided on Saturday by the local administrator, Guilhermina Bacia, when she mentioned that at least six trucks/day leave Ecunha's warehouses full of reindeer potatoes, to supply the national informal markets, with emphasis to Luanda.
She added that the peasants produce and drain without any interruption, every month, due to the fact that the municipality is located in a low-lying area, with a large amount of water, both in dry and rainy weather.
The municipal administrator said that the location, known in colonial times as “Vila-flor” and “Queen of the Reindeer Potato”, receives traders and trucks from different regions of the country to purchase large quantities of this crop.
Guilhermina Bacia reported that Ecunha, whose majority of the population is dedicated to the countryside, controls 48 agricultural cooperatives, supported by an equal number of field schools, in addition to encouraging fertilizers subsidized by the Government of Huambo and the Institute of Agrarian Development (IDA).
She said that, in addition to reindeer potatoes and onions, the municipality also produces large quantities of rice, which already reaches the local population's table.

The administrator reported that there is an intervention plan for access roads in all villages, with emphasis on the town of Tchitatamenla, with actions to combat poverty, to make the movement of people and goods from production areas to production centers faster. sale and consumption.
She said that many secondary and tertiary roads had already been worked on with earthworks, but that they were deteriorating due to the intense rains, hence the need to carry out palliative work soon, especially in the localities of Canguimbo, Canhala, Ilha dos Amores and Tchitamenla , taking into account the constant rains that fall in the district.
He highlighted the fact that the municipal headquarters has already been interconnected, since December 2023, with electricity from the national grid, which is in the experimental phase, and is currently being expanded in the surrounding areas and peripheral neighborhoods, with the placement of stations of Transformation (PT).
