Luanda- National Institute for Biodiversity and Conservation Areas started last Thursday in Lobito, coastal Benguela province, the signposting process of the wetland areas in Angola.
The initial phase covered Lobito Bay, aimed to publicising the importance of protecting and conservation of wetlands.
The process was also intended to raise awareness among local communities about the rational use of wetlands in Angola.
Known as unique in the region, Lobito Bay is a wetland zone located in the city center with own specific features.
The mouth region is remarkable for its complex of lakes that gathers a variety of water birds.
The Institute’s director general Albertina Nzuzi mentioned the ecotourism as one of the socio-economic activities that can be developed in the area to encourage the preservation of biodiversity and its protection.
The official said that the Lobito lagoon is one of the wetlands of international importance, deposited with the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, at the time of Angola's accession as a member of the Convention on 10 October 2021, with 10 Ramsar sites having been registered.
The signposting of wetlands in Angola is part of the commemorative programme of the 2nd of February, the World Wetlands Day.
