Libreville (Gabon)-The African Union Commissioner, Josefa Correia Sacko, on Monday in Libreville defended an increased concessional funding for climate resilience adaptation to enable the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The African diplomat, who was speaking in the Gabonese capital during the official opening of this year's Africa Climate Week, said Africa remains strongly committed to the global fight against climate change, with all African countries ratifying the Paris Agreement and setting targets on their nationally determined contributions.

The Angolan diplomat said that the Glasgow Climate Pact renewed the spirit of the Paris Agreement on several fronts, with developed countries committing to double their funding by 2025.

"We remain with unresolved issues from Glasgow, in particular the recognition of special needs and circumstances for Africa. It is our expectation that deliberations on this issue and on loss and damage will be advanced at COP 27 in Sham el Sheikh", Ms Sacko said.

To support the efforts of the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the African Union adopted during the February 2022 Summit of Heads of State and of Government, the operational strategy containing the green recovery action plan and climate services.

The AU Commission, in collaboration with several partners is implementing its emblematic project "Great Green Wall" initiative that started in the Sahel region further extended to the Southern African region.

Regarding biodiversity, the Angolan diplomat said Africa is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, with the forest ecosystem of the Congo basin serving as an important  biodiversity hotspot.
