Talatona - Angola assumed Thursday the five-year rotating presidency of the Youth and Sports of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).

This was during the 14th Conference of Ministers held in Angolan capital, Luanda, during which the ministers reiterated their commitment to continue with the community cooperation program for young people and sports through the holding of activities aimed at contributing to the affirmation of the CPLP in the national and international arena.

The participants spoke of the need for a joint political strategy for youth, crucial to promoting the sustainable development of member states in the social, economic and environmental sectors.

The ministers recalled that young people are the guarantors of the community's future and that climate change and environmental protection are among the main concerns of this age group.

According to the ministers, every young person in the CPLP can actively contribute to efforts to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change, within the framework of the implementation of the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

According to the final communiqué, the participants reaffirmed the CPLP's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda.

The Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries was created on July 17, 1996 in Lisbon and is made up of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique, São Tomé e Príncipe and East Timor.

The CPLP aims at establishing political-diplomatic consultation and cooperation in all its forms and promotion and defense of the Portuguese language through intense cultural dialogue.

The Organization is governed by the principles of sovereign equality of member states, non-interference in internal affairs, respect for their identity, reciprocal treatment and the primacy of peace, democracy and the rule of law.

It also defends human rights and social justice, respect for territorial integrity, the promotion of development and a win-win cooperation.
