Luanda – Former international basketball player José Carlos Guimarães is the new coach of 1º de Agosto basketball team, replacing Manuel Sousa “Necas”.

This information is published on the website of 1º de Agosto Club, however, without further details on the reasons behind the change of coaches.

In this season, despite having won the Angola Cup, 1º de Agosto failed to conquer the National Championship, whose trophy was won by Petro de Luanda.

Before this appointment, the new head-coach of 1º de Agosto was training the 1º de Agosto Academy.

José Carlos Ribeiro de Carvalho Guimarães, born on April 9, 1964, in Luanda, was a former basketball player (Point guard and shooting guard) and has also led the National Team at various levels.

He was assistant coach of the Angolan national team from May 2012 to May 2013.

The former player achieved notoriety in his career as he played for Benfica FC, where he won several titles in the National Championship and the Portuguese Cup.

José Carlos Guimarães also materialised his “dream” of playing against the US Olympic Dream Team in 1992 and in the 1996 Olympic Games.
