Luanda- The Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, ruled out Saturday, in Luanda, the possibility of Angola hosting the African Football Championship in 2029.

He stated that the country's current priority is the worthy celebration of 50 years of national independence, to be celebrated in 2025.

Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the audience that the Head of State, João Lourenço, granted to the President of CAF, Patrice Motsepe, the leader of the governing body for sport in Angola said, however, that everything will be done to qualify for the next CAN and try to reach the final.

Commenting on CAF's appeal about the need to involve the private sector for Angola to win the next CAN, he said that in terms of sport, it is no longer possible for States alone to hold back large investments in football and sport in general.

He informed that the sector he heads expects to achieve “good things in 2025”, adding that some experiments have already been carried out this year.

He cited as an example the Judo OPEN, which ended last week, at the Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion, in Luanda.

The possibility of Angola reaching the final and winning the CAN in Morocco, in 2025, and hosting the 2029 edition were suggested following the performance of the National Team in the competition held in January this year (should take place in 2023), in Côte d ' Ivoire, where they reached the quarter-finals for the third time in history, after Ghana' 2008 and Angola' 2010.

At the event, Angola was placed in group D, based in the city of Bouaké, and finished the initial phase in the lead, with seven points as a result of two victories (Mauritania (3-2), Burkina Faso (2-0) and a draw against of Algeria (1-1).

The National Team also scored six goals, conceded just three and saw two athletes named “Man of the Match”, namely Gelson Dala and Kialonda Gaspar. PA/MC/DOJ
