Soyo - Climate change is contributing negatively to Angola's large fish catches, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Cármen do Sacramento Neto has said.

Speaking to the press following the inauguration of a fishing complex, the minister said the phenomenon is also contributing to the extinction of some marine species and compromising the Angolan government's targets for the fisheries sector.

According to the minister, the goals set by the government include fish self-sufficiency  all over the country, with the aim to provide more fish for the Angolan population.

"This goal has not yet been achieved, due to climate change problems which, to a certain extent, influence the reduction in the quantity and quality of fish caught in the country," the minister said.

The minister added that despite these impediments, the country is still moving towards achieving the proposed goals, given the large investments the sector has received from both the State and the private sector.

Without giving any figures, the minister highlighted the promotion of aquaculture, which is beginning to take significant steps forward throughout the country, providing more fish for many  Angolan families.

The minister underscored that the government continues to provide incentives to entrepreneurs operating in the fisheries sector to increase fish production levels.JFC/JL/AMP
