Luanda - The Minister of Industry and Trade, Rui Miguêns de Oliveira, on Tuesday in Vienna defended the joint efforts between States to promote inclusive and sustainable digital industrial development.

Speaking at the 20th General Conference of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) under the theme 'Fair Globalization: Innovative Solutions for the Industry of Tomorrow', he stressed the need for technology transfer and investment in technical training.

According to the minister, the commitment will ensure job creation, poverty reduction, fight hunger and food insecurity and ensure sustainable socio-economic development.

Rui Miguêns de Oliveira stressed that efforts to accelerate industrialization will not be successful without an effective opening of global consumer markets and the elimination of subsidy policies that distort the international competitiveness of the economies of developing countries, particularly on the African continent.

He called for everyone's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and gradually decarbonize industries, investing in renewable energies, especially green hydrogen, minimizing the effects of climate change, protecting future generations.

He said that Angola has also expressed its concern about the effects caused by climate change and has the energy transition as a priority item on its agenda.

The Event, which takes place from November 27 to December 1, 2023, is attended by various entities, including the State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Economy of Austria, the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia, as well as the Ministers of Trade and Industry of several Member States.

The General Conference, which is taking place in a context marked by the current global crises caused by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and armed conflicts, aims to open new paths for sustainability, digital inclusion and economic resilience.

The debate is focused on how inclusive and sustainable industrial development can support sustainable supply chains, limit climate breakdown and contribute to ending hunger.

On the sidelines of the conference, the Angolan Minister of Industry and Trade held meetings with the Director-General of UNIDO, Gerd Müller, and some heads of delegations from the organization's Member States, as part of the strengthening of cooperation relations in matters related to the development of sustainable industries.

The UNIDO General Conference is the supreme policy-making body, where all Member States meet once every two years to determine the guiding principles and policies of the Organization.

The conference also appoints, every four years, the Director-General, as well as the members of the Industrial Development Council and the Programme and Programme Committee.

UNIDO provides support to its 172 Member States through four mandated functions: technical cooperation; action-oriented research and policy advisory services; activities related to normative standards; and foster partnerships for the transfer of knowledge and technology.
