Luanda - The Angolan government is continuing to work to remove 72.6 percent of the population employed informally, the Secretary of State for the Economy, Dalva Ringote said on Tuesday.

Based on estimates from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for 2018, it represents between 40 and 60 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The data also add that the same section of the population moves between 43 and 64 billion US dollars per year.

Given these figures, which are still a reference nowadays, the official said that the Government, with the local partners, is committed to removing this group from informality, despite considering it to be hard work.

Dalva Ringote was speaking at the opening of the first plenary session of the Informal Economic Observatory (OEI), an organization that has strengthened the entire economic formalization agenda to which Angola has been dedicating itself over the last few years.

Faced with the definition and operationalisation of the Programme for the Reconversion of the Informal Economy (PREI), he pointed out that the Informal Economic Observatory has, among other functions, to propose measures that propitiate the reduction of informality levels, support the mechanisms of monitoring and evaluation of public policies, indicate projects and study dedicated to research of the informal economy, for the promotion of formalization.

The observatory, which has partners for the development of projects, in particular the European Union (EU), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF), will now articulate and consult with the Government on aspects linked to economic formalization.

She indicated that, within the framework of the challenges of combating informality, much is expected of the legitimate representatives of this body, so that the country may ensure a process of transition to sustainable formality.

"Maximum dedication is expected of you as the consultation and auscultation body of the multi-sectoral commission for the implementation of the strategy for formalization of the economy, and that the regular work of the OEI results in the production of data and knowledge that contributes to the continuous improvement of the effectiveness of PREI, with the regular generation of reasoned proposals and reports," he augured.
