Malanje – At least 56,000 tons of sugar cane were lost in a devastating fire that ravaged 1,639 hectares of BIOCOM's production field on Wednesday in Cacuso, northern Malanje province.

The incident will hamper the production of considerable amounts of sugar, alcohol and ethanol, the manager of Biofuels Company of Angola (BIOCOM) Jerri Vissapa said on Saturday.

He said that the fire also caused damage to the fertilization along the sugarcane field, among other damages, including environmental ones.

A communiqué from BIOCOM's Administration sent to ANGOP states that the company, in collaboration with local authorities, is working to determine the real causes of the fire and prevent similar situations from happening again, especially in cultivation areas.

The source adds that the company remains committed to promoting the agro-industrial development of Angola, in order to contribute to the country's economic diversification.

“BIOCOM will intensify communication campaigns, appealing to the residents of the surrounding areas not to start the practice of setting fire to the forest to hunt animals”, concludes the press note.
