Luanda - Foreign Minister Téte António stressed Wednesday the need to build and make the agricultural and fisheries systems resilient in the current context of the Covid-19 pandemic, plagues, climate change.

According to the minister, who was speaking at the opening of the 31st session of the FAO Regional Conference for Africa, agriculture, with around 80 percent of the productive force in the Southern Region, continues to be the main source of subsistence of the majority of people of the countries of the sub-region.

According to the government official, the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic again exposed the vulnerability of the sub-region to external shocks, as most demand and supply routes are linked to some epicentres of the coronavirus.

"Accordingly, concerted efforts at the multilateral level to work on a common programme to ensure food security and sustainable agri-food systems are paramount and we recommend better coordination in the provision of technical assistance, capacity building and financing for this purpose", Téte António stressed.

For Téte António, with the eradication of hunger and poverty embodied in goals 1 and 2 of the MDG and in the United Nations Agenda 2030, FAO is the essential partner in the articulation and implementation of coordinated actions to meet the challenges, both at national, regional and global levels, especially with regard to food security and nutrition issues in Africa.

The African continent, he said, faces complex and multifaceted challenges that require an exponential increase in its agricultural productivity, capable of increasing the income of small food producers, particularly women, subsistence farmers, herders and fishermen, including through ensuring equal access to land and other productive resources such as knowledge, financial services, markets and value-adding and employment opportunities.
