Luanda – The Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, passed away last Tuesday (5) evening in Nigeria, his country, at the age of 63.
The official OPEC Twitter put out the information, deeming the event a profound loss for the institution, the oil industry and the international community. The cause of the death has not yet been made public.
The Twitter expresses deep sadness and gratitude for the over forty years of altruist service of Mr Barkindo at OPEC, a posture that will inspire OPEC for years to come.
Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, who remained OPEC’s Secretary General for six years, was to end his term in August this year.
Reacting to the sad event, the Angolan minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo – who presided over OPEC between 2020/2021 – addressed his condolences to the organisation, to his Nigerian counterpart and the family in mourning.
