Porto Amboim – Porto Amboim Shipyard (PAENAL), located in the central Cuanza Sul Province, has its dockyard open for commercial and mining vessels, the company’s director general, Luis Barroso, told ANGOP on Thursday.

Porto Amboim Estaleiro Naval (Porto Amboim Shipyard) company has a 490-metre long and 10 metres deep pier with International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) certification from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which allows ships for commercial or mining activities to dock in it.

Luís Barroso underscored the excellent mechanical structure of the pier and the industrial means it possesses to support the oil industry, as well as commercial and mining ships, as long as there is interest from these sectors.

Barroso stressed that the PAENAL has been actively in the market to ensure the possibility for new projects to be implemented, of which the National Oil and Gas Agency (ANPG) plays a key role and is aware of the current situation of the Porto Amboim Shipyard.

The PAENAL employs 96 people from the total of 1500 workers the company had before it was forced to do a massive layoff, due to the worsening of the global financial situation that hit especially the oil sector.

The Shipyard, with a 27-hectares area of service and 6.6 hectares reserved for future storage and logistics work, was opened in 2008 to support the oil and gas industry.

The state-owned oil company Sonangol holds 40 percent of the shares, SBM and South Korea's DSME hold 30 percent each.
