Caxito - At least 13,400 litres of fuel that were being smuggled into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were seized on Friday by the National Police at the Libongos checkpoint, in Bengo province.

The fuel coming from Luanda was transported in eight trucks, whose deposits had been changed from 500 to over 1,500 litres of diesel each.

The product seized was bound for the municipality of Soyo (Zaire) and the DRC, presumably for sale.

The truckers claim that the fuel was meant for refuelling their vehicles along the route of over three thousand kilometres.

They justify this measure as they believe that the fuel sold in DRC is adulterated, expensive, of poor quality and damages the vehicles, that is why they are taking back-up fuel to be on the safe side.
