Ondjiva – Twenty-seven thousand 430 students from the 1st cycle of secondary education grade 7, 8 and 9 from the province of Cunene will benefit from scholarships this academic year, within the scope of the Girls’ Empowerment and Learning for All.
Each student will receive, per year, a registration bonus worth 35 thousand kwanzas. Girls with good academic performance will have 35 thousand more at the end of the school year.
The director of the Education office in Cunene, Domingos de Oliveira, told ANGOP Thursday that the initiative aims to increase the retention rate of girls and boys in educational institutions.
He said that the registration process for students in public and private schools, in the municipalities of Cuanhama, Ombadja, Namacunde, Cuvelai, Curoca and Cahama, begins in March.
“The project arises with the intention of minimizing difficulties within families, regarding the purchase of school materials, as well as contributing to school success and quality of teaching”, he stated.
In the current academic year, 228 thousand 770 students attend classes in the province of Cunene, 26,479 in pre-school, 154 thousand 925 in primary education, 30 thousand 357 in the I cycle and 17

The province has 334 schools, of which 257 are primary schools, 41 compounds, 23 colleges, five teaching schools, three high schools and the same number of vocational schools and two polytechnic institutes.
The initiative, lasting for two years, is part of the Girls' Empowerment and Learning for All Project (PAT II), of the Ministry of Education, and is funded by the World Bank.
The Scholarship Program, whose official presentation took place in October 2022, expects to benefit 900,000 students from the 1st Cycle of Public and Public-Private Secondary Education across the country, with special attention to girls. PEM/LHE/OHA/TED/DOJ
